In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)

This foundational Word from God, written by Moses, gives no place for compromise, whatever the source of its counter argument. As the late Dr. D. James Kennedy observed, “We are in a culture war, and only one side can survive.”

As we consider the current, overwhelming degeneration of our American culture, we need to diagnose its cause in order to determine its cure. Its cause is the discarding of the former respect our society had for the validity and authority of God’s Word, the Holy Bible. The Church, even the Evangelical Church, is guilty of that disrespect as well; so how can society do any better? Such disrespect leads to a disregard for the precepts of God’s Word. Consequently, “. . . every man [does] that which [is] right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25) However, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Proverbs 14:12)

How has this happened? It is the result of Satan’s effective use of Darwin to throw doubt upon Moses’ record of God’s Word in Genesis 1- 11, using the same ploy he used to deceive Eve in the Garden of Eden: “Yea, hath God said . . . ?” (Genesis 3:1) And the intelligentsia of our society, including that of the Church, has fallen for it! Thus, evolutionistic intellectualism has replaced the Christianity upon which our country was founded (and grew to be the greatest, most compassionate and prosperous nation in the world) with the current, pagan religion of secular humanism, firmly based, not upon fact or inerrant revelation from God, but on blind faith in evolution.

A great celebration is planned this year for February 12th, but not for Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday. Instead, the celebration is planned for Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday as well as the 150th anniversary of the publication of his influential book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. The conjectures and speculations of that book have led to the naturalistic materialism that has overtaken our culture and given us the 20th Century’s philosophical justification for abortion, eugenics, Marxism in its various forms (e.g., socialism, communism, fascism, Nazism) and all the other horrors resulting from such anti-Biblical worldviews. Darwin’s legacy is deadly, indeed, and viewing the DVD, Darwin’s Deadly Legacy, hosted by Dr. Kennedy, is highly recommended.

However, Darwinism is not the sole cause of our loss of respect for God’s Word. It is also the old-universe uniformitarianism upon which evolution is based. The Apostle Peter prophesied the advent of this Satanically inspired doctrine in these last days in II Peter 3:3-4: “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” There is not a better definition of uniformitarianism than that editorially underlined last phrase. This view that present processes of astronomy, geology, chemistry and biology are all that occurred in the past, succinctly expressed by the dictum of Charles Lyell, “The present is the key to the past,” denies God’s supernatural work in creating and sustaining His entire universe.

But, without God’s interventions, these processes would have taken vast amounts of time; hence the unscientific, unreasonable, blindfaith- based belief that it took millions and billions of years for the universe and everything in it to evolve has become a foundational mindset in our culture. Thus, the divine miracles of Genesis 1-11 are treated as myths, and the Gospel of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and Him crucified and resurrected is made irrelevant. And that, of course, is Satan’s goal!

Uniformitarianism directly contradicts the fact that the universe is young, a fact which Christ made clear when He discussed the topic of marriage and divorce (referring to Adam and Eve, human beings, not animals, since animals neither marry nor get divorced!). In Matthew 19:4 He said: “. . . He which made them at the beginning made them male and female,” and in Mark 10:6 He even more definitely asserted: “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.” Therefore, mankind was created in the loins of Adam and Eve at the beginning of the creation, not millions and billions of years later, or else Christ, Who is the Truth (John 14:6), was telling a lie or was ignorant of the truth. In either case He could not be God and, therefore, could not be our sinless Saviour, for God knows all truth and cannot lie (Titus 1:2).Thus, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is rendered meaningless by any attempt of theologians to compromise Scripture, an implicit denial of our Creator’s Word, to accommodate belief in an old universe.

Having demonstrated the Church’s major role in advancing what we diagnosed as the cause of the overwhelming degeneration of our American culture, what therapy must be established to achieve its cure? If we, who profess to be Christians, will swallow our intellectual pride to humble ourselves and pray, and seek God’s face in believing the plain sense of His Scriptures, and turn from our wicked ways of compromising God’s unchanging Word with the ever changing speculations of men; then He will hear from heaven, and forgive our sin, and will heal our land. (cf. II Chronicles 7:14.) Until then, we can only expect His continued wrathful judgment. All professing Christian individuals and institutions need to heed Christ’s admonition in John 5:46,47: “For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?” There can be NO COMPROMISE!
